Synthesis of Urea Formaldehyde (UF) Moulding Compound

1. Raw Materials & Reaction Mechanism

  • Core Components‌:
    • Urea‌ (CH₄N₂O) and ‌formaldehyde‌ (CH₂O) in a molar ratio of ‌1:1.5–2.0‌ to ensure proper cross-linking.
    • Catalysts‌:
      • Alkaline catalysts‌ (e.g., NaOH) for initial polymerization.
      • Acidic catalysts‌ (e.g., NH₄Cl or HCOOH) for curing.
    • Additives‌: Optional modifiers (e.g., ‌polyvinyl alcohol‌ or ‌melamine‌) to enhance mechanical/thermal properties.

2. Synthesis Steps

Step 1: Hydroxymethylation

  • Conditions‌:
    • Mix urea and formaldehyde in ‌alkaline conditions‌ (pH 7.2–8.4) at ‌40–45°C‌ for 10–30 minutes.
    • Reaction generates ‌hydroxymethyl urea‌ intermediates.Excavator track roller

Step 2: Condensation Polymerization

  • Acid-Catalyzed Reaction‌:
    • Adjust pH to ‌5.1–5.4‌ using ‌NH₄Cl‌ or ‌HCOOH‌ to initiate polycondensation.
    • Heat to ‌85–102°C‌ for 1–2 hours to form a ‌branched polymer network‌ with methylene and methylene Gufaith Urea Formaldehyde Moulding Compound linkages.
    • Monitor viscosity to determine reaction completion.

  • Additives‌:

    • Curing accelerators‌ (e.g., ZnSO₄ or oxalate esters) for faster cross-linking.
  • Processing‌:
    • Dry and grind the resin into powder.
    • Mix with additives and press under ‌15–30 MPa‌ at ‌130–160°C‌ to form moulded parts
